Both are enjoyable literacy board games, but which one trumps?
History of Monopoly
January 1904, Lizzie Magie created The Landlord’s Game, today known as Monopoly, with the purpose to teach the masses about income inequality. More than 100 years later and a roaring real estate market, we all now understand how beneficial owning property has been.
Today with home prices and rents soaring, income inequality continues to be an issue. Similar to Magie’s time, we’re in a moment in time where the world needs to learn about asset growth and income inequality again in an area much less spotlighted: the Stock Market.
How-To: Stock Market
'Stock Market 101' is not a standard subject in school, while 80% of youth get their investment 'wisdom' from flashy TikToks and long-winded, click-bait YouTube videos promising millions in seconds. Investing is not an overnight, money-making activity. It requires patience, strategy and an understanding of macroeconomics.
Now more than ever investment literacy has become a required skill like cooking or computers, both widely considered a prerequisite to living a modern day, comfortable life.
We wanted to weave together the world of board games and investments into an enticing product - one that opens the doors of investment literacy to everyone.
We carefully curated a journey where players would learn the psychology of investing, portfolio management, and the butterfly effect of real-world events on various industries.
The New Era
January 2024, exactly 120 years later, we present: Stock Shock, the investment strategy board game with the mission of making investment literacy fun and accessible to all.
We took 1 year of full-time, extensive research and development with our small team of 4 board game loving members, including artists, investment experts, engineers and game designers.
Compared to Monopoly, there is a lot of overlap in regards to ease of play, chance, and players, however there is a more strategic approach, quick gameplay and a modern theme to Stock Shock. We took the time to create a direct comparison between the two money-themed board games:
Our goal is to make Stock Shock the #1 investment literacy board game in the world.
Lizzie Magie had great intentions to educate the masses on real estate investing in 1904 and now Monopoly has become a global icon and household name.
Now we hope to take the torch and educate and entertain the world for the next 120 years.
Happy Investing!
